12v Generator

Why can’t the generator start?
You test-run a generator. Before you press the Start button, battery voltage reads 30V, when you press start, it reads 12V and the generator cannot start. Why?
Maybe you have a bad starter motor. Either the bearings are seizing up or the windings have shorted out.
Feel the starter after you try to start it, if the starter feels warm after a short period then it is bad. It is converting all the battery power to heat instead of mechanical power
Another thing is the wires connecting to the starter are burned up or are to thin from flexing. If you feel the wires between the battery and starter and they are hot in one spot…then the wires are the problem and need replaced because the thin wire is using up all the voltage in resistance
