Have you heard of this new body armor carbon nanotubes?
BBC News reports of the imminent use of carbon nanotubes to create body armor ultra-solid. Much stronger than any known filament, carbon nanotubes are made by scientists who run a section one atom thick carbon in the form of graphite, tiny tubes. According to the report, carbon nanotubes are ideal for body armor because material made of them would be good to absorb the energy from fragments that struck them at high speed fragments, perhaps, in the form of bullets and shrapnel. The report also indicates that the material made from carbon nanotubes "could also find applications in the field of hi-tech "smart" clothing, bomb-proof bins, flexible solar panels, and eventually as a replacement for a wire copper in the transmission of electric power and signals. "
CNT is currently produced in large quantities, but the length of the individual CNT is only about a millimeter. It will probably be a decade or two before you can buy sheets or rolls CNT at Home Depot.
