How much should it cost to have a Home Stanby Generator installed ?
I am looking to have a Kohler 20 KW generator installed, THe placement is 5 foot from the Gas Meeter and about 7 foot from the electric source.
Provided the location you have in mind meets code. You can’t be in front of a widow, there has to be working clearance on all sides and minimum distance to the property line to name a few.
An automatic 200 amp transfer switch is several hundred dollars, copper wire to and from the meter and generator, about 8 man hours + permits will run hundreds more. A best case low end price will be more than $1,500 and a worst case upper end price over $2,500.
The gas work won’t be near as much, but that’s not my field of expertise.
In as much as you may not wish to spend that much for something you might not use often or for days on end, consider a smaller unit connected to a manual transfer switch and a sub panel with only the critical circuits in it.
Whatever you decide, don’t hesitate to get 5 or more estimates. Disregard the highest AND lowest. Then chose a company based on reputation. Don’t pay anyone in full until after final inspection and a full days running load test.
