how should i plan a wind turbine?
im wanting to build a wind turbine just enough to power my air conditioner in the summer. What can i use for power storage? obviously, a car battery isnt enough. Also, what could i use for the generator? I was thinking like an old electric motor from like a printer?? Ideas are greatly appreciated. I am a mechanical engineer in my junior yr.
There is a lot of info on the internet, just search for small experimental wind turbines for ideas. I saw one guy who made his own generator using a rear wheel assembly using the outside of the brake drum to hold permanent magnets. He put a coil around the outside of the assembly. As the magnets rotated they induced a current into the coil. Because the frequency of the output voltage will depend on the number of magnets and windings and you want only 60 cycles for the air conditioner you need to convert the variable output of the Ac variable frequency generator to DC with a full wave rectifier and use the Dc produced to charge a bank of car batteries. You can attach an inverter that converts the battery voltage back to a constant 120 volts , 60 cycle to feed your ac appliances. Actually I think it is much less complicated to just buy a 100 watt solar panel. The sun shines most everyday but the wind only blows about 50 percent of the time. I lived in a motor home for many year with just solar power and it was only a 50 watt panel. I charged 3 car batteries in parallel with 4 gauge wire and took the output of the batteries into a 650 watt inverter i bought from an rv store. The inverter changed the battery voltage to 120 volts at 5.4 amps which was plenty of power for me. For your air conditioner usage you would probably want six batteries and a 1600 watt inverter and a 100 watt panel at least. In the long run it will be much cheaper than a wind turbine. There are too many problems associated with wind turbines , I took an 8 wk college course on wind turbines with materials prepared by workers with 20 years of experience last spring, even climbed a tower. We studied up to 2.5 megawatt machines, a lot of problems with gear reductions, blade pitch control , power conversion , turbine rotation to face the wind. etc. Go solar!
