Low Speed Wind Turbine

Some help with wind power please.?
What type of turbine/fan would be best for an area with low wind speeds? I have found a map of wind speeds at the DOE, is ther another source where i can get this information?
Hey Devin, News Reed is quite right, most turbines manufactured today are designed to operate in the 8 to 30 mile per hour range. This is because most areas with any real wind resource have speeds in this range about 80% of the time. If you live someplace that has typically lower winds, but the wind still blows non the less, there are turbines that can make use of it. There are lots of places to get wind data, some more reliable than others. In our case, there was a Coast Gaurd Station just 2 miles away, and by going through NOAA’s website, I was able to access that stations wind readings each hour. It wasn’t very user friendly, basically we had to mine the data each hour and collect our own historical numbers. One of my favorite places for weather data in general is the Weather Underground at WUNDERGROUND.COM You can simply enter your zip code, or city and state and go to that locations weather forecast page. Then scroll down to the bottom and there is a list of, “Neighborhood,” stations within a certain range of that location. These are generally private weather stations put up by individuals who are enthusiastic about collecting meterological data. They can post their info online, and in most cases, you can click on one of the neighborhood sites and get historical data from that persons monitoring system going back weeks, months or even years.
If you are really in the market for a wind turbine for low winds, check out each of the manufacturers websites and see what each of their products, “Cut In Wind Speed,” is. This is the minimum wind that their product will produce power at. In most cases, the two bladed models will work better in low wind situations.
I would suggest you do some research on products available, and take the time to call some of the manufacturers directly to talk to their tech support people. One good place to look for sources is Home Power Magazine, I have included their website below. Our home was actually featured in a couple articles in their magazine in the past. In one case, it was because we decided to install a small wind turbine and solar panel to collect small amounts of electricity mainly to collect data on how much wind and sun was really available at our home. If you subscribe to their magazine, you can use their search engine to find an article called, “Starting Small.” There are some other places to learn about wind power as well. In the end you might decide not to get involved at all, and that’s fine. At least you will be well informed. Good luck, and take care, Rudydoo
