Similarities and differences of solar cells and solar panels?
Photovoltaic cells are smaller, platelets individual, about as big as your hand, that go into solar panels. But I guess the question is to compare photovoltaic (solar electricity) for thermal (solar) panels. Both need the sun to work, fastening systems are designed so as to have the sun shines on them as much as possible. Neither works at night, so a kind of storage or backup is generally used. For solar power, this could be charging the batteries, or return the electricity grid at night. For solar hot water, this could be a large insulated tank or electric or return ot gas heat at night. An exception would be in tropical climates, where the "cold" water is even colder than a pool, and someone would be willing to bathe without hot water, if they were. Solar electricity is expensive, and the panels are light, so sometimes a motorized mount is used to track the sun across the sky. Because solar panels are cheap, such monitoring is usually not worth it – people panels is sufficient to meet their needs. For solar electric panels are most effective when they are cold, so they are mounted to good air circulation. For solar heat, the goal is to get as hot as possible. Solar power is quite expensive considering that the design of a system to produce less of its full power requirements. Solar hot water is cheap enough that a system is generally sized to 100% of hot water needs. PV prices have fallen by about two orders of magnitude (100x) in the last 30 years. Solar thermal is still the same price. A solar panel can be made at home. People have posted YouTube videos of how they made them. It is not practical to make solar panels at home.
