Is a Solectria PVI 3000 inverter be used as an interconnection network?

I just had a grid-tie system photovoltaic solar panels installed with 12 Suntech (205kw) and a Solectria PVI 3000 inverter. My installation does not work with batteries, but I knew that I would add a battery backup. Someone just told me that the grid is Solectria single link, ie, does not have the ability to use battery power. This person told me that I replace the inverter Solectria. Is this true? I can not believe that the company that installed my system gives me an inverter is grid-tie, even when they knew that I would add a battery backup system. Can I add battery backup without replacing the Solectria? Any costs or other disadvantages to this, provided it is possible? Thank you for any help!

You absolutely can add batteries. You just need to install the batteries and charge controller between the panels and the inverter. The inverter using DC batteries in the same way it uses the voltage from the panels. The following is just my personal opinion. Unless you have frequent power outages spend money on batteries and the power lost by heat while "pumping" of electricity in and out of batteries would really take away from the system's effectiveness. You may also be able to talk to your power company and check in time billing use. They will charge you a higher rate during the day and an extremely low during the night. Your sun will provide the most of your needs during the day, so you'll mostly use the power of the grid only at night when rates are cheap.
