diy aquarium co2 problem?
17 watt
10 gallon
3 java fern
1 java moss
1 pennywort
1 amazon sword
1 anubias nana
2 platies
recently i made a diy co2 system for my aquarium, but the after effects include this white gel like substance covering the tank’s wall and the plants as well as the decorations. it is possible to get rid of it with a simple algae scraper, but did i make the co2 generator incorrectly. does anybody else have the same problem? thanks .
Are you using 2 bottles? Because you do not want to get any yeast into your tank, this is why we use 2 bottles, one to stop yeast getting in.
If you don’t use a second bottle, put the airline from your main reaction chamber (with the yeast/sugar solution) into a second smaller bottle with water, make the pipe go down into the water. Put a second airline from the new small bottle, at the top (above the water level) and run that to your tank with a non return valve.
Any bad stuff (yeast/bacetria/etc) will be absorbed into the water. You shouldn’t need to change this water that often, although might as well do it when you change your sugar/yeast mix.
Avoid using a standard air stone if you can also, this tends to go white and funny too.
EDIT: Nina makes a good comment but I suspect (or hope) they have gotten something the wrong way around by mistake.
When you are cycling (without fish) you want ammonia to stay in the water for bacteria to feed on to multiply… adding plants in (or anything that removes ammonia) will be removing the “food” for your filtration bacteria, and will slow your cycle.
If you are cycling with fish in… then plants will help a bit, but both of these actions (fish and plants) will slightly slow down your cycle. You will also need to make water changes still to stop the ammonia from the fish getting too high, we’re talking every other day depending on level (if you don’t test, it’s best to do it anyway).
Fishless cycle is much better – no need to do a water change until the cycle is fully complete, will be faster and best of all – no stressed (or possibly dead) fish.
